History & Philosophy

Our History

The Taranaki primary school’s Science and Engineering Fair was first delivered in 2012 by Energy Skills Aotearoa.

Encouraging tamariki to form an interest in STEM at an early age is extremely important to build our future energy workforce.

Over the past 12 years the Fair has steadily grown and now has an annual participation of 260 Taranaki primary school students from all around Taranaki.

The event is proudly supported by local energy/sceince/engineering companies and has provided a fun environment for students to learn about energy, science and engineering.

Our Philosophy

“Building bright minds together”

1. Empowerment and Knowledge
  • Knowledge is a powerful tool that enables students to understand and influence the world around them.
  • We want to create an environment where students can explore scientific concepts and engineering principles hands-on, fostering confidence in their abilities.
2. Curiosity as a Catalyst
  • Curiosity drives innovation and discovery. Encouraging questions leads to deeper understanding.
  • We have designed the fair to be interactive and engaging, allowing students to ask questions, experiment, and explore new ideas without fear of failure.
3. Collaboration and Community
  • Science and engineering thrives in collaborative environments. Sharing knowledge enhances learning.
  •  We want to encourage team projects and partnerships with local businesses and schools to provide mentorship and resources.
4. Diversity in STEM
  • Diverse perspectives enrich scientific inquiry and innovation. All students should feel welcome and valued.
  • We promote inclusivity by encouraging participation from underrepresented groups and showcasing a variety of projects that reflect diverse interests and backgrounds.
5. Practical Application and Real- World Impact
  • Understanding the practical implications of science and engineering can motivate students to pursue these fields.
  • We like to highlight projects that address local challenges or benefit the community, connecting students’ work to real-world issues.
6. Lifelong Learning
  • The journey in science and engineering is ongoing. Cultivating a love for learning will inspire students beyond the fair
